The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) requires mining companies to submit a Social and Labour Plan (SLP) when applying for mining rights, and the Local Economic Development (LED) projects of the SLP must be aligned with the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) of the local municipality. This means it is imperative for mines to work closely with local authorities. Canyon Coal is committed to fulfilling these statutory obligations and to ensure it makes a meaningful contribution in its host mining communities, investing in their lives and growing together.

Canyon Coal strives to go beyond what is required; therefore, we established a Social Licensing Department which has reinforced the company’s ability to support enterprise development, local procurement and employment in the communities where it operates, while further strengthening compliance with the Mining Charter.

Offering learnerships and internships to community members, employing operational staff from local communities with the help of the national Department of Labour and Community Forums and engaging local community groups to raise awareness in their constituencies about all opportunities are part of our relations with our communities.

In the area of procurement, we endeavour to contract local services, help historically disadvantaged South Africans establish and grow their businesses, and assist small enterprises in obtaining capital goods and machinery to run their own mining services businesses.
